Television and audio-video repair

A television that will not start is rarely worth replacing. Most of the time it is the power section or the backlight — two things that cost a fraction of a new set.

On LED sets the two usual failures are bulging capacitors in the power board and burnt-out diodes in the backlight. The symptoms differ: the first clicks and refuses to start, the second has sound but a black screen you can only read with a torch. Both are repairs, not replacements.

Plasma and CRT sets still make sense for people running retro consoles on them — lag is zero and the colours are the ones the games were drawn for. I repair those too, including the power modules and the chassis.
